Submit a claim for insured healthcare services you receive while travelling within Canada: Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program
If you’re applying for reimbursement for any insured healthcare services (covered by the Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program) you receive while travelling within Canada, you need to submit the Within Canada Services Claim Form.
Use the Within Canada Services Claim Form to submit a claim for any insured hospital or physician services you receive while travelling within Canada.
Physician and hospital services are reimbursed at the rate allowed for the service in the province or territory where the service was provided. Inpatient and outpatient hospital facility services are reimbursed at the approved reciprocal billing rate. Eligible reimbursements are issued directly to you as the applicant.
Medically necessary services received from a private facility may be insured by the Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program if the facility (where you receive the service) and service are eligible to be reciprocally billed to Nova Scotia or the service and facility are pre-approved by the Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program. Receipts
Keep all official documents and receipts for any insured hospital and physician services you receive while travelling within Canada and temporarily absent from Nova Scotia.
Who can use this form
You need to use this form to submit a claim for reimbursement for insured healthcare services that are covered by the Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program if you received the services in another province or territory and already paid for the services.
You need to submit the form within 12 months from the date of the last service or date of hospital discharge.
What you need to do
- Complete the Within Canada Services Claim Form (PDF).
- Check the form for details on all required supporting documents.
- Submit your completed form and supporting documents.
How long it takes
It should take 6 weeks to get a reimbursement cheque for the approved amount of your claim. It can take longer if more information is needed or if your form hasn’t been filled in correctly.
Cost
There is no cost to submit the form.
Before you start
Make sure you have:
- Health Card number
- detailed medical notes and documentation, including reason for visit, diagnosis and treatment or services received
- detailed receipts, invoices and proof of payment
Online
When you submit the form online you need to create an account or sign in. You also need to upload the Within Canada Services Claim Form PDF any supporting documents.
You can use the Within Canada Services Claim Form (PDF 165 kB) if you’re unable to submit the form online. Send your completed form and supporting documents by mail or fax. Or drop them off at MSI Resident Services (use the secure drop box; in-person service isn’t available).
