Healthcare coverage if you move away from Nova Scotia: Health Card
What happens to your insured healthcare services through the Nova Scotia Health Insurance Program when you move away from Nova Scotia.
Moving outside Canada
If you move from Nova Scotia to establish permanent residence outside of Canada your Health Card coverage ends on the day you leave Canada.
Moving within Canada
If you move from Nova Scotia to live permanently in another province or territory within Canada, your Health Card coverage ends on the last day of the second month following the date you leave Nova Scotia (for example, if you arrive in the new province on 27 September, your coverage ends 30 November). If you have a work or study permit, your coverage ends on the day you leave Nova Scotia to live permanently in another province or territory.
If you’re registered as a family in Nova Scotia and move before your spouse or common-law partner, your Health Card can be extended for up to 1 year (12 months). Health Card coverage for you and your family ends on the last day of the second month following the date your spouse or common-law partner leaves Nova Scotia to join you.
You need to contact MSI Resident Services to provide your new address and the date you’ll leave the province. You should register for a Health Card in your new province or territory as soon as possible.
